You’ve probably heard of nitroglycerin.
It’s a medication used to treat the symptoms of angina, especially chest pain or pressure, that happen when there is not enough blood flowing to the heart.

But for the first few decades of its existence, it was not seen that way.

In the late 1860s, with his new patent on dynamite, Nobel began to manufacture it in factories.
In these factories, workers would complain of headaches on Mondays, but they would disappear over the weekends.
Also, factory workers who suffered from chest pain or angina experienced relief during the work week, but it always returned on the weekends!
Nobel and local physicians soon learned why… because the nitroglycerin was lowering the blood pressure of the factory workers.
And by 1877, Nobel was using nitroglycerin for angina and related issues.
The same deadly chemical that had been known to explode and kill had become a life-saving drug!
It would be another 100 years before scientists would discover WHY nitroglycerin worked.
But here’s the final plot twist…
Alfred Nobel had amassed great wealth through his businesses, much of it through dynamite, and he used most of his wealth to create the endowment for the “Nobel Prize.”
In 1998, that prize went to three men for their discoveries concerning “nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system.”
